Note
Broadly speaking, a pillar is any vertical architectural element. Pillars may extend to the foundation or be supported by other structural members, and shorter pillars are used within the roof frame. Pillars are named after their positions within the building. In the Song dynasty Yingzao fashi (1103), pillar types that extend to the foundation include leveling pillars (pingzhu 平柱), eaves pillars (yanzhu 檐柱), and corner pillars (jiaozhu 角柱). In the Qing dynasty Gongcheng zuofa (1734), major pillar types include yanzhu, interior pillars (jinzhu 金柱), and gable pillars (shanzhu 山柱).
