Note

Pingqi 平棊, meaning literally “level game board,” is a kind of ceiling in traditional Chinese architecture. The term is used to describe the ceiling of a palatial type hall (dian 殿) in Yingzao fashi 營造法式 (1103). Modern scholars usually use it to refer to the ceilings of buildings constructed in the Tang, Liao and Song dynasties. In the Ming and Qing dynasties the term pingqi panding 平棋盘顶 was used instead of pingqi (Wu 1611-1644, 2.2a; Li 1795, 4.5b). The Chinese character 平 (ping) means flat or level, while the character 棊 (qi) means the game weiqi 圍棋 (“Chinese chess” or “Go”; Zhang 1985, 582) or, by extension, the orthogonal-grid pattern of a game board (Liu 184-220, 4.9b). The implication is that pingqi is a kind of ceiling with a chessboard pattern. The term pingqi panding 平棋盘顶 has the same meaning.

In Yingzao fashi, pingqi is listed in the sections of small-scale carpentry (xiaomuzuo 小木作), carving works (diaozuo 雕作), and polychrome painting works (caihuazuo 彩畫作). According to the illustrations in Yingzao fashi, pingqi are only used in palatial-type halls (diantang 殿堂). They are located above the mingfu 明栿 beams and the backing boards (beiban 背板) are supported by beams called pingqifang 平棊枋 (YZFS.5.3b); the pingqi itself does not provide roof support. Pingqi are characterized by a series of squares because multiple backing boards (beiban 背板), which are further divided by board casings (nanzi 難子), are joined to form the whole ceiling (YZFS.8.1b). Carved and painted decorative elements called huazi 花子 are pasted on the backing boards.5
