According to the Gongcheng zuofa《工程做法》 the term liujin douke refers to a dougong that connects the eaves purlin (yanheng 檐桁) to the interior purlin (jinheng 金桁) via one or more slanted timbers (chenggan 秤桿) (Gongbu, 1734, 28-16b). Literally meaning “flowing gold bracket set,” it can be used in any of the three eaves bracket sets types, i.e. the inter-columnar bracket set (pingshenke 平身科), the corner bracket set (jiaoke 角科), and the pillar-top bracket set (zhutouke 柱头科). Here the word jin 金 refers to the interior purlin (xiajinheng下金桁), while liu 溜 can be understood as a verb meaning “to slide” (Liu Chang, 2010, 48). It might also be understood as “a row" (排, Hanyu dacidian). The slanted timber bar echoes the form of the Song dynasty xia’ang (k000178), but it functions less for roof load transfer and more as a stabilizing component locking the eaves to the interior structure. The rear end of the chenggan is embedded in a large block (dou 斗 k000157) of a bracket set called huataike 花台科, which is placed on the top of a squared beam called huataifang 花台枋. The huataifang is located under the interior purlin between the pillars connected to a squared beam (fang 枋). Modern scholars have used the term liujindougong 溜金斗栱 to refer both to the liujindouke 溜金斗科 and tiaojindouke 挑金斗科 (Liang 1934, 108).
