Guazigong is a Song dynasty term for one type of bracket arm (gong 栱) placed parallel to the wall plane. Meaning, literally, "melon-seed bracket arms," it measures between the linggong 令栱 and nidaogong 泥道栱in size. When used in in chonggong zao 重栱造, it is placed atop the end of the huagong 華栱 (tiaotou 跳頭) or slanted bracket arm (ang 昂). Longer bracket arms, called mangong 慢栱, are typically place above the guazigong, these, in turn, support a beam parallel to the building plane (Li 2009, 4.3a) .
Some scholars who debate the origin of the names of the five important types of bracket arm discussed in Yingzao fashi (1103) believe their differentiation is primarily related to their length and location (Ho 1983, Li 2011, Feng 2012).3
宋式斗栱构件名称。平行于屋身的栱的一种,用于重栱造斗栱,置于各跳華栱端頭或昂上,其上用慢栱 (李 2009,4.3a)。4
