chónggǒng 重栱

Literally “doubled" or "layered" bracket arms, chongong refers to two bracket arms, one atop the other, placed parallel to the building plane to support squared beams (fang 方/枋). When used above projecting arms (tiaotou 挑頭 or huagong 華栱) or the ang 昂, the lower arm is called a guazigong 瓜子栱 and the upper arm is called a mangong 慢栱; when used as a fubigong 扶壁栱, the lower arm is called a nidaogong 泥道栱 and the upper arm is called a mangong 慢栱 (Li 2009, 4.12b). The earliest use of chonggong we have found was by Li Linfu in the Tang dynasty Tang liudian 唐六典 (ca. 739; Li et al. 1992, 592), a text which was used in reference to the ranking of palace architecture into the Qing dynasty.3
重栱指平行於屋身方向上下重疊的两层栱,其上承方/枋:斗栱中挑頭或昂上的重栱,下為瓜子栱,上為慢栱;扶壁栱中的重栱,下為泥道栱,上為慢栱(李 2009, 4.12b)。在曆史文獻中最早見于唐代《唐六典》(ca. 739; 李等 1992,592),与宫室等级制度相关;并一直沿用至清代。3
